Oedema therapy is a therapy that is aimed at draining oedema. Oedema is an abnormal accumulation of fluid, which is caused by a disturbed balance between the supply and discharge of fluid.
\nThere are different types of oedema: general oedema (e.g. as a result of a heart or kidney disorder), venous oedema (when the blood vessels are not functioning properly), lipoedema (this is a combination of fat and fluid accumulation) and lymphoedema.<\/p>\n
Causes of lymphedema can be: a congenital defect of the lymphatic vessels (primary lymphedema), but also as a result of an operation edema can occur (secondary lymphedema). An example of secondary lymphedema is edema in the arm after treatment for breast cancer.<\/p>\n

An important (final) goal is ultimately self-management, in which the client learns to adequately 'treat' and regulate the edema themselves.<\/p>\n
