Fall prevention

As we get older, the risk of falling increases. About one in three people over 65 falls at least once a year. One in ten elderly people who fall sustain an injury, such as a broken hip. If people are afraid of falling, they often become less active, which can lead to loneliness.

Causes

Falling has various causes. Sometimes it has to do with the person themselves, sometimes with the environment. Elderly people can suffer from dizziness, poorer vision or reduced muscle strength, which makes them less stable on their legs. Urinary incontinence is also sometimes a cause of falling because people want to go to the toilet quickly. Dangers in the environment include poor lighting, high thresholds, loose rugs or a sofa that is too low. Although not every fall can be prevented, it is certainly possible to take measures that greatly reduce the risk of falling.

Implications

Both falling and fear of falling can have major consequences for the way people live their daily lives. Doing groceries independently, gardening or doing other hobbies are all activities that can be compromised by falling or fear of falling. We will map out your risk of falling by means of a personal interview and a few short tests. You will then receive advice on what you can do to prevent falling.
