Edema therapy

Oedema therapy is a therapy that is aimed at draining oedema. Oedema is an abnormal accumulation of fluid, which is caused by a disturbed balance between the supply and discharge of fluid.
There are different types of oedema: general oedema (e.g. as a result of a heart or kidney disorder), venous oedema (when the blood vessels are not functioning properly), lipoedema (this is a combination of fat and fluid accumulation) and lymphoedema.

Causes of lymphedema can be: a congenital defect of the lymphatic vessels (primary lymphedema), but also as a result of an operation edema can occur (secondary lymphedema). An example of secondary lymphedema is edema in the arm after treatment for breast cancer.

The edema therapist can stimulate the drainage of fluid using various treatment techniques:

  • Information regarding rules of conduct (work, sports) and skin hygiene
  • Manual lymphatic drainage
  • Compression therapy (including bandaging)
  • Lymphatic taping
  • Exercise therapy

An important (final) goal is ultimately self-management, in which the client learns to adequately 'treat' and regulate the edema themselves.
